What To Know About Nudge Bar
The terms “nudge bar” and “bull bar” are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are actually two different types of front bumper 4wd accessories. In this article, we will talk about the nudge bar to help you identify if it’s what you’re looking for, or if you need a bull bar instead.
First of all, bull bars, nudge bars, or even their cousins like grille guard, moose bar, or roo bar have the same purpose: to protect the front of your truck. Exactly what they are protecting and from what, makes all the difference.
Bull Bar vs Nudge Bar
Bull bars are typically made of heavy-duty steel with a tube that goes all around your front bumper. This offers excellent protection for your vehicle and passengers, in case of collision. However, they can be very dangerous—sometimes even fatal—for pedestrians. For this reason, it is important to make sure that you are installing a bull bar responsibly and as much as possible, only if really necessary.
The reason why they are also called moose bar or roo (short of kangaroo) bar is because they are intended to protect the truck’s front bumper when you’re out with the wildlife and an animal suddenly crosses as you are driving. When used in a built-up area such as a town or city, with many people it’s a different story.
This is where the Hamer Nudge Bar comes in. While it is also created for the purpose of front-end protection, it is intended for minor accidents.
The Weight Difference and Installation Between a Bull Bar and Nudge Bar
Both the Hamer 4×4 storm and cyclone nudge bars are only 21 kilograms in weight, while bull bars can weigh up to 75 kilograms. That means the nudge bar has less impact on fuel consumption compared to the bull bar.
Another advantage of a nudge bar is that it does not require the removal of the original front bumper. You can simply mount it on the front of the car. The nudge bar is also designed in a way that secures the radiator while keeping the engine bay safe.
On the other hand, one of the better features of bull bars is that they are compatible with a winch just like the King Series Plus bull bar. If you want to know more about Hamer 4×4 bull bars which are compatible with a winch, check out this article.
The Price Difference
Naturally, nudge bars are not just lighter in weight but also for the pocket. For example, in Thailand the Storm Nudge bar costs around $200, while the King Series costs about $800.
Why Is It Called ‘Nudge Bar’?
Basically, it is called a nudge bar because it is used for pushing or nudging animals out of the way when you are out in the wild. If your car is equipped with a nudge bar, you can be sure that you can handle any minor accidents without noticeable damage. Like the bull bar, the nudge bar has also been set up to work with airbags so these will be activated in the event of a collision to save you from injury.

Still Can’t Choose Between Nudge Bar and Bull Bar?
As we have covered earlier, the main difference between them are the size and intensity.
A nudge bar is made from tubular steel that covers only half of the grill with the purpose of protecting it from any minor accidents. While a bull bar covers are larger part of the front bumper, offering protection from large objects.
Deciding what to get between the two will depend on your needs. If you always do off-road adventures then it is advisable that you get the bull bar, just keep in mind that its extra weight may affect fuel consumption. And when you mostly drive in the metropolitan area, then a nudge bar gives adequate protection.
